Google is by far and away the leader in pay per click advertising. This enables them to receive higher bids from advertisers as they compete for top listings. Google Adsense is an opportunity to capitalize on this. Adsense allows you to add a snippet of HTML code to your webpage and display Google Ads.
For those who can generate a fair amount of traffic to their website they can make a living simply off of Adsense. You can view Adsense in action by taking a look at the ads on the right hand side of this page.
First you'll want to It's free to setup an account so there is no reason to just set one up now. This will give you some insight into the interface and the capabilities you'll have.
After you've setup an account with Adsense you'll be able to setup new advertising zones. This gives you the capability to add Adsense in multiple spots on your website and give them unique names. This information is useful because you'll learn what works and what doesn't work when placing ads.
After you've setup a 'zone' you'll receive a snippet of HTML code to place on your website. The great thing is that you can customize the colors and the add layouts to match your website so that the ads are integrated seamlessly into your web design.
Once you setup the zone it'll take about 10 minutes for the zone to activate and start displaying ads on your website.
The thing that sets Adsense apart from it's competitors is that Adsense will crawl the webpage that your ad is listed on to try and determine the content. It'll then deliver ads related to the topic of your webpage.
This helps with click-throughs which is how you make money with Adsense. When someone clicks on an add that's displayed on your website will pay you a percentage of their revenue for that click. As far as my research has gone, I've never found information on the percentage that you earn for a click.
As you can see relevant ads are important to your success. If your website is related to chrome wheels you want ads that complement chrome wheels. If the ads displayed had to do with mortgages you'd have less of a CTR, click through rate. Which obviously isn't going to make you any money.
Using Google Adsense doesn't make sense to use on every website. To give you an example, it wouldn't make sense to use Adsense on my website BBQFans.com. If I did, ads related to other steak branding iron sites would come up and I could potentially lose a customer to a competitor.
Adsense is ideal for an informational site because if they're searching for a particular subject they are likely to click on a relevant ad on your web page. The benefit is that you're not out of a customer because you're not selling anything.
Adsense is another way monetizing a website, I've actually covered this topic in depth at selling advertising space on your website.
I invite you to visit my webmaster forum, it's a great place to discuss websites and ask questions to fellow webmasters regarding topics that you may still have questions on.
