If you've taken the time to read through some of the pages on how to make a website I'm sure that you're feeling a bit overwhelmed. You're probably thinking to yourself, "I should hire a web designer". Well, don't.
Hiring a web designer can be a very expensive choice and it's possible that you won't be happy with the final outcome. Although there are certain reasons to hire a web designer along with the fact that there are some very talented and honest web designers, you can do the same thing with a bit of trial and error plus you'll save a boatload of money.
I want to take a moment and state that the information below does not represent all web designers. I actually have one project that I use a web designer for so I am not saying to not use a web designer, I'm simply stating certain things to consider before you invest a bunch of money in a website.
Please look at it this way, my website is about 'How To Make A Website' not 'How To Hire A Web Designer'.
When you hire a web designer you most likely have an idea of what you'd like your website to look like. Hiring someone else to try and envision the same website could be difficult. Granted some may offer a guarantee but eventually they will start to become tired of the revisions so it becomes difficult to get a project completed.
When you hire a web designer they offer you a quote of even have a series of packages to choose from. The problem is that you often times change certain aspects of your website and that's when the fees start to get added.
If you simply learned how to make a website from the start you can make as many revisions to your website without incurring additional costs.
This leads me to my next point.
Okay, you selected a web designer that did a great job without any extra fees. The job is completed and a month down the road you want to make changes to say the the color, layout or font of your website. It's safe to assume that you're web designer isn't going to do that for free.
Throughout this website you'll find pages related to making changes to basic features like this and you can do it as often as you'd like for FREE!
Another thing to consider is how unique is your website. Many of the low-cost web designers have a large selection of templates to choose from and simply re-use that template by modifying the colors, content and images for your website.
If you choose to build your own website you can create a web design that's unique to you.
With everything that I've said above you may consider a freelance web designer for certain aspects of your website. Like I mentioned above, I use a freelance web designer because he's more knowledgeable in certain aspects of web design. The great thing about freelance web designers is that they are generally very affordable because they are competing with other freelance web designers for new projects.
A great source for freelance work is RentACoder.com. The nice thing is that you're not limited to just web design. If you have a script that you'd like written to accomplish a certain task on your website, need to have graphic work done, or simply need someone to design a logo RentACoder.com is a great place to look.
I'm by no means giving you this information to talk you out of using a web designer to build your website. Basically I'm trying to give you information on what to look for and what to expect. With that said, just be sure that you do your research before plunking down a large sum of money on a web designer.
If you'd like more information on web designers I'd suggest that you take a look through our webmaster forum. It's a great source for asking questions to fellow webmasters. You may just find a good web designer there!
