In the past, we've discussed the value for Pinterest, especially for brands and bloggers. The more time I spend on the site and the more I focus on web traffic sources, the more I like what I see!
Unlike on Facebook, there is a culture of sharing when it comes to Pinterest. People don't like hit Like and then forget about you. Instead, they add your content to their profile for Pinterest-eternity. This is great for backlinks, and creates a long-term set of recurring traffic. This is a feature I highly suggest you take advantage of. Yes, it takes time to figure out exactly what to share, how, and when, but it is completely worthwhile.
With that said, there is still the issue of how much time you need to be on there in general. Should you keep a tab open all day, everyday? Should you pin a few things every few days and then disappear?
Here's a sample of our previous thoughts on Pinterest:

Depending on your brand and your social media needs, I recommend a few different approaches.
First, answer these questions.
1) How do you want to leverage Pinterest?
Are you looking for backlinks alone or do you want to generate a following? If you just want to add a few links to your posts and page, you don't need to spend too much time. But, do realize that one-sided sharing is not the point of social media. If people see you using your profile as a means to link share, they won't get too involved, and may run away. That's not what you want.
To generate a brand following, you need to do more focused, insightful work. Don't worry; it's not that hard!
2) How much time are you available?
Although Pinterest doesn't require too much time or effort, you need to have a sense of your availability. If you think you can spend an hour a week, but can only spend 15 minutes every two weeks, don't create an account that needs intense maintenance.
Instead, opt towards more minimal engagement. No matter what, you can find something awesome to re-pin within even 5 minutes a day!
3) Are you willing to engage?
Just like on Facebook and Twitter, you need to get involved. Comment on pins, follow other people, comment on their pins, send out compliments to people, and just be an overall engaging, considerate person.
These rules work for people in all fields, from internet marketing to jewelry design. Be part of the site, not just someone who siphons off a modicum of attention.
When you figure out these things, you can set up a time schedule. It does not take very much time, and if you spend more than 2 hours a week connecting on Pinterest, I sure hope you're using it as your primary social media site. Otherwise, you're spending a ton of time! I'd recommend spending between 10-30 minutes on Pinterest everyday, if possible. Less is possible, more is likely (it can be addicting). Just know what you want before you log in, and use it wisely!
Remember: It's not all about you. Yes, do optimize your content for Pinterest. Yes, do upload your images and files. But, also share the work of others. When you read an article that your Pinterest followers would love, Pin it! When you see another Pin you enjoy, Pin it! Share content, but at the very least, go half-and-half with original content and the work of others.
